Pink Floyd’s New Album: The Endless River

Pink Floyd’s new album titled “The Endless River” has been announced by Columbia Records. The company says “it is an album of mainly ambient and instrumental music based on the 1993 – 1994 Division Bell sessions which feature David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright.” The first Pink Floyd album in 20 years will be produced by Gilmour alongside Phil Manzanera, Youth and recording engineer Andy Jackson.

It is known that there was plenty of material left over from the Division Bell sessions. In January 1993, Gilmour, Mason and Wright gathered in a studio and began jamming and writing new material. These improvisations were recorded and helped fuel the creative writing process. Two weeks into the sessions they had approximately 65 pieces of music. Production later moved to Astoria, Gilmour’s houseboat and recording studio. The band listened to and voted on each recorded piece, eventually reducing the material down to about 27 songs. Eliminating some tracks, and combining some others, they got the list down to around fifteen strong tunes. They later arrived at the final track list of eleven.

Longtime Pink Floyd backing singer Durga McBroom-Hudson is also involved in the new project. She added even more details on The Endless River project in a post on her Facebook page. “The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled ‘The Big Spliff’ that Nick Mason spoke about),” she explained. “Which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it. But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That’s the song you see being worked on in the photo.” McBroom-Hudson also verified that the album will be all previously unreleased material.

The new album is due out in October, 2014.
